| In the year 1600, under the regulations of the Roman Catholic Church and the Spanish colonial administration (Real Patronato), the youngest reasonable age for a "bachiller" (bachelor) to be appointed as a parish priest would generally be 24 or 25 years old. Following the Council of Trent (1545–1563), which strictly codified clerical requirements to combat earlier abuses, the minimum age to be ordained a priest was set at 24 years old. In Spanish law and many ecclesiastical contexts, 25 was considered the age of full legal "majority." For a high-responsibility role like the Cura Beneficiado of a territory like Jalpa, bishops preferred candidates who had reached this "perfect age." Therefore, if Joseph de Figueroa was indeed appointed in 14 July 1600, he was born around 1574-1576. |
