genealogy

My family roots are in Guadalupe Victoria (La Villita) and the towns around Jalpa, Zacatecas, going back to the 1600s. Marcos Venegas (b~1620) bought the land now covering La Villita and surrounding areas in 1646 from Francisco Ocampo Saavedra and was given ownership retroactive to 1644 as Ocampo sold the land before it had been granted to him by the Royal authorities.

The area known then as Sitio de Ganado de Menor El Sauz (alias El Rancho Viejo, alias La Villita), covered approximately 2.9 square miles, shown on the right.

The family trees above, from weddings in 1809 and 1805 in Jalpa, show that Catarina Venegas Ceballos is the mother of four generations, including Alejo Gonzalez de Isla (b~1695) and Jose Maria Gonzalez de Isla (b~1734). These are my direct Gonzalez ancestors. Catarina was born approximately in 1660 and died on May 5, 1703 from typhoid.

.

Though she had multiple children with Vicente Covarrubias de Figueroa and Sebastian Gonzalez de Isla, Catarina never married either men. Vicente settled in El Teul, south of Tlaltenango, and married Teresa Carlos de Godoy around 1695. Sebastian married Maria Rodriguez in 1709 in Tlaltenango.

.

Alejo Gonzalez de Isla is the biological son of Catarina Venegas Ceballos and Sebastian Gonzalez de Isla, born around 1695 and died sometime after 1760.

.

Sebastian is the son of Nicolas Gonzalez de Isla and Maria Carrillo Davila (alias Carrillo de Aro), and the grandson of Diego Gonzalez de Isla and Cecilia Vasquez (aka Sandoval) of Nochistlan, Zacatecas. The descendants of Sebastian and Catarina were reconfirmed as the rightful heirs of Marcos Venegas in multiple legal rulings throughout the 1700s. These men are said to descend from Juan Lozano, who migrated to Mexico from Lobón, Extremadura, Spain around 1560.
